Silver goblets, also known as a Chalice, have been used in religious ceremonies since the time of Christ. The main purpose for a goblet was to commemorate a special event such as a wedding, a family feast or gathering of some importance. Even today, a goblet or pair of goblets is still being used in religious ceremonies like communions, weddings, dedications, baptisms and Bar Mitzvahs. A goblet is also a status symbol because of their design, construction and pure beauty. There are goblets made from various materials such as pewter, crystal, inlayed with gold, sterling silver and silver.

Silver goblets are by far, the most exquisite and purchased goblets. There are antique, or vintage, silver goblets, sterling silver goblets and several name brand silver goblets which will suit any special occasion. The purchase of a silver goblet can be done through various online stemware companies, auction houses and of course, brick and mortar department and specialty stores. A goblet, especially silver goblets, will never lose their status appeal. They make for an excellent conversation piece and the best thing about a goblet is they can be used by their owner, whenever they want to have a drink of wine from a special cup.

That is what a goblet is, a fancy made cup for drinking wine or any other drink. Some goblets can be made with a large, medium or small bowl. Then, the stem, which can be thin or thick, is attached to the bowl and base. In medieval times, goblet’s had a large bowl attached to a tiny stem and flat base. Sometimes, the bowl was heavier than the stem and base that held it. Over time, goblet’s had various designs and shapes to fit the needs of their users. The majority of goblets were handcrafted specifically for their owner.

Silver Goblet Design

Today, there are as many goblet designs as there are people who enjoy drinking from them. In fact, there are a large variety of silver goblets that are made with a plain silver bowl on top, and an ornate design for the stem and base. There are also exquisite and ornate designed bowls and plain silver stems and bases. Or, a silver goblet can be made however the user of the goblet wants it be to made. Popular silver goblets will, for the most part, have a leaf or grape design on the bowl, stem and base or whole goblet itself. These designs usually represent what they cup will be used for, drinking wine. Some silver goblets have a signature stamp, or hallmark, pressed into the base. This hallmark was to show who made the cup or whom the cup belonged to.

Even though the leaf and grape design is of silver goblets is the norm, when it comes to religious ceremonies, there are more designs and ornaments which can be added to or hung from silver goblets. The goblet is a special cup to many who use it. Sometimes, a silver goblet will only be taken out once a year. This is why silver goblets for religious ceremonies are usually the most expensive. Certain religions will spare no expense when it comes to their silver goblet.

Silver Goblets Sizes

Depending on the height and design of a silver goblet, the price can be inexpensive to very expensive. Silver goblets can range in height of 8.6 cm to over 25 cm. Since silver goblets can be made to order, they can be made to whatever height the individual or religions group desires. The height and design will carry a price as low as $29.99 all the way to $1999.99. For the most part, a silver goblet is a one time purchase. If taken care of, the one goblet will last a lifetime. This is true if the proper silver cleaning solution is used annually. The only way to stop silver from becoming tarnished or discolored is to polish it then keep the silver goblet wrapped in a velvet material.

I just love silver chalices. My favorite one has a statue of Isis for the stem, but the simple classic ones are lovely too! The variety and uniqueness are wonderful and you can find a chalice to fit any occassion from celebrating a baby's birth to use for spiritual ceremonies. Great information!

I agree Temperance. This is the sort of gift that can really only be given for those super important milestones. Something that you will treasure for the rest of your life.

I like having silver cups and teapots. My parents have some. I remember helping my mom clean the silver when growing up and it was a major chore! That is the only problem with it, it just takes forever to clean.
