All in One Computers
72All in one computers have grown quickly in popularity. The sleek design of these devices allow for more desk space, as the tower, disc drive, and other components are located within a thin monitor. Usually, all in one computers require a mouse and keyboard, but some models utilize a touch screen. Here are some things to keep in mind when buying an all in one.
The operating system is the first decision you should make, as well as being the most important. While the choice may appear simple--Mac or Windows--it is actually much more complex. Macs are inherently more expensive than their PC counterparts, so keep this in mind when planning your budget. Additionally, the Mac does not currently support touch screen technology. However, the Mac all in one does have the ability to run two operating systems simultaneously on the same hard drive.
All in One Computer Features
One of the best features of an all in one computer is that it is compact. Unfortunately this also means that any post-purchase hardware upgrades are nearly impossible. Therefore, you should not assume that you yourself can improve on anything, so it is important that you look at all the components prior to making a purchase. While many all in one computers come with a preset amount of disc space and RAM (Random Access Memory), purchasing directly from the manufacturer may give you options to upgrade these. Something else to know is that, because of the small size of the all in ones, many of the parts are the same as most laptops'. This may mean a slight loss of functionality when compared to other desktops. Also, remember that while all in ones are compact, they still are not portable like their laptop cousins.
A main draw for all in one computers is their screen size. One company, Tek Panel, has integrated all in one technology with LCD flat screen televisions, offering a computer with a fifty two inch screen with an optional touch screen feature. Touch screens are available in some, but not all models. Another feature that might make one of these computers better for a business application is the ability to mount onto walls. While this is not available in all models, this is offered in many.
Something to consider with all this screen space is the graphics card and the display. For some all in ones, there is no dedicated graphics or video card, meaning that the display is run using a portion of the system's random access memory. This might slow down your computer somewhat and offer less than optimal display. However, using a shared graphic solution, might be cheaper than a dedicated card. Additionally, the dpi is something to take into consideration. Some screens, while large, may only be capable of a low quality display--such as 1440 by 900--that might not suit all your needs.
All in One Computer Add Ons
All in one computers offer a variety of extras that might help you make a decision. Wireless network cards are featured in most--but not all--all in ones, so this is something you will want to check on for each model. Webcams are built into some models--like the iMac-- while others allow for a snap-on webcam. A huge bonus of having an all in one is the fact that all the ports are easily accessible, allowing for fewer wire tangles. Speakers are usually built in as well. Another thing to consider is the disc drive. Many all in ones are capable of DVD reading and writing, but this may vary. With a large screen and wall mount capabilities, some all in ones have remotes so you can use your computer as a television.
Because of its space saving design, the all in one only needs one power cable, which can save you money on your electric bill. However, it is important to consider all of the features of these uniques systems before making a purchase. These computers are relatively new to the market, so when buying one you should research, especially on newer models.
