79It is common for people to look for 5 x 7 envelopes, because people don’t stop to think that a 5 x 7 envelope is not going to be able to hold their 5 x 7 invitation. Most 5 x 7 invitations are going to fit inside of a 5 ¼” x 7 ¼” Baronial Lee Envelope, which are the pointed flap kind or an A-Style A7 envelope, which are the type that has a square flap with square corners. These envelopes are the same size, just different types. These 5x7 invitation envelopes are most commonly used invitation size for wedding invitation envelopes.
It is important to think about what kind of message you are trying to convey with your invitation. Is it casual or formal. A more formal invitation should probably be put in the Baronial envelope, while the A-Style envelopes would be good for the more casual event. If you really are looking for 5 inch by 7 inch envelopes the closest you are going to get as far as standard envelope sizes are concerned is the 5 ¼” x 7 ¼”. If you absolutely have to have a 5 by 7 envelope it is possible to find a template to create envelopes from. You will need to size it down to the right size because it will probably be for a 5 ¼” x 7 ¼” envelope. This would be a good method if you only need a few. I don’t think I would recommend doing this for more that a hundred, because you are going to get very tired of creating them. That is unless you have a whole bunch of people helping you. You can also have these made for you if you need a lot of them. By a lot I mean starting at about a thousand. You can probably have them made in smaller batches, but it will cost more per envelope. It will cost a lot more per envelope compared to the already created ones either way. The good thing about having them made this way is that you can have a larger variety of 5x7 colored envelopes.
Envelope Selection
It is kind of funny that even though there is a huge size selection whenever it comes to envelopes, there are many instances where they do not have what you need. For example if you need inner and outer envelopes for wedding invitations you will only be able to purchase these through a wedding invitation supply company. If it also pretty difficult to find them in different colors and patterns. If you want any type of special printing done on the inside or any cropped images on the envelopes you will have to either make them yourself or have them made for a fee.

There's so many types of envelopes. Usually I'll just get the one that fits the mail I'm sending. Never thought the type of envelope also contributes some meaning.
thanks! I love envelopes. I usually bind them together like a FOLDER, and place a tag fora eack like bills, receipts, etc. Sometimes i make my own enevelopes using gift wrappers. they're as beautiful!
When you consider that paper and envelopes are there to serve the communicator, it does seem daft that a producer hasn't simply downsized the paper or upsized the 5x7 envelope to accomodate such a common misconception. Nonetheless, a great article, thanks!
We get lots of people who use C5 envelopes for stuff but i think the dimensions are not quite the same as a 5 x 7. which is actually better to use small letters and wedding invites and so on ?
