The springs that are used for opening and closing of the garage doors are called as garage door springs. This is a very critical component of the garage doors since the entire action of the door depends on the quality and the accuracy of the garage door springs. Hence this component should be given great emphasis such that the smooth operation of garage doors is possible. The selection of the springs should be made based on number of factors such as the load, environmental conditions, movement of the garage door and many other factors. There are typically two types of springs that can be used based on the movement of the doors. The other important aspect is that replacing garage door springs should be very easy when some wear and tear occurs to the spring.

The Two Types of Garage Door Springs

There are two types of garage door springs namely the garage door torsion springs and the extension springs. Only one type of spring can serve well for each particular type of garage door. The selection of the spring depends upon the moving action of the door. Both the springs can be used for manual and also for the electronic method of opening and closing of the door. The torsion type spring operates based on the principle of twisting. The spring is mounted on the shaft placed above the door. The springs rest on the center portion of the shaft. The twisting action of the spring enables opening and closing of the door. The safety of the door from spring failure is assured due to the usage of shaft over the door. The shaft can support the door, when failure occurs. The extension spring operated based on the stretching principle. Unlike the torsion spring that the extension spring is placed on the sides of the rim and are being termed as side way spring due to the position of the springs. There are greater chances for the garage door extension springs to undergo wear and tear due to the application of greater amount of force on the sides of the door. Hence it is necessary that the extension springs should be well supported with large cables to resist the load.

Selecting Garage Door Springs

Since even a small scratch or wear on the springs can spoil the efficiency of the garage door, it is very significant that the person opts for the best garage door springs that will provide great durability and strength to ensure proper working of the garage door.

The spring that is being purchased should be easily replaceable, incase of any fault. The springs should also be built in such a manner that it can be adjusted and proper level of tension can be achieved. The safety of the springs should also be high. There are possibilities of risky accidents if the spring fails.

The spring that is being opted should be easy to assemble with the other parts. For swinging action of the sectional doors, the torsion springs can be appropriate. The extension springs can be well suited for the garage doors that require swinging up action. Hence the person must be very clear about the moving action of the garage door to select the right kind of spring.

In any type of garage door springs, proper level of the tension should be maintained for the purpose of perfect operation. It is well advised that the person checks the tension level once every few months to detect any flaws that arises in it. The tension level of the garage door springs should be adjusted manually with a great level of care.

The buyer after analyzing various options possible for the purchase of springs should be convinced with a particular type. If the person is unable to make a choice, then expert advice or service can be opted for arriving at the best decision. Surely the garage door springs are the vital component that needs to be carefully selected to serve for the specific purpose.

Whenever it come to replacing the springs this is highly unadvised for the do it your selfer because it can be dangerous and sometimes even fatal.
