Garage Door Repair

There are two types of garages. One has a door leading from the garage directly into the house. The other is called a vault. It is usually attached to the house but has no door leading directly into the house, or it is unattached with the same single exit, the garage door itself.

If you have a vault style garage door that cannot be opened manually you need to make sure you are not inside of the garage if it breaks. If your garage door does not have a switch to turn off the garage door opener. For if the garage door is controlled by your garage door opener, and, somehow, you were working in your garage with the door closed, you might realize the importance of proper garage door maintenance.

If your garage door opens with a remote, the signal goes to a garage door opener that is usually found in the center of the garage roof. Your remote has a code that is beamed into your garage door opener and activates the mechanism. While you have your mechanic checking out your garage door, ask him about the deactivation switch.

Know where the switch is and pull it while he is repairing your door. See if you can open the door with the switch deactivated. If you can't then you should know to never close yourself in a vault garage with no escape. You might also deactivate the switch, go outside and see if you can manually shut the garage door. Usually, you will be able to shut the door. What you should do then is to try and to open it with the switch deactivated from outside. If you can't then you should know that your car may not be available for your use if the electricity is out during a storm or if your garage door opener is broke or if you forgot to check the batteries in your remote.

Some garage doors are of heavy metal and some are of a lighter, cheaper metal. From my experience those heavier metal doors usually break faster than the cheaper ones. 

Garage doors are usually painted at the factory, but if yours has dulled or is brackish from lack of proper maintenance, there are products that can be sprayed onto your door and hosed down with water. 

Garage doors are hung on coasters found on either side of the door. The spring that pulls them up either manually or with the garage door opener usually has a ten year expiration date. If your garage door is older than ten years and has not been repaired occassionally by a garage mechanic, you should ask one to check the springs while they do a yearly check up of oiling and resetting your door. It is not difficult to find automatic garage door repair parts if you know the name and model number of your garage door opener.

What I would do in order to have my door repaired is to look at my garage door and decide what I want done. If the door looks to you like it can be repaired then don't call someone who is advertising new doors. For them it is cheaper and more cost productive to get rid of your old door, coasters, garage door opener and all, and replace them with one of their factory models. If you think that your garage door can be repaired, call someone who services garage doors and let them repair yours.

Repairs like scrubbing off rust or oiling the coasters can be done by you if you have the time and the products needed like industrial sprays and an oil can. For most of us, a yearly visit by a professional usually costs about 69 dollars and is well worth the price.
